Voiceworks #108 Retrograde
‘Retrograde’ marks Voiceworks’ very first foray into publishing longform fiction. At fifteen pages, ‘Day Spa’ by Paul Dalla Rosa is the longest piece published in Voiceworks to date. Paul shares his creative process in an interview in this issue’s Behind the Curtain section, where he describes the story best himself:
‘Day Spa’ is about a woman with a chronic illness who works for a school program teaching teenagers with chronic pain. When that initiative’s funding is cut, she has to do something to secure her future. It was written at a time when I had been in constant pain for four years, a time when I lived like an animal, when I lived in hell.
Inside the issue, you’ll also find stories from spooky suburbia and decaying love dens, poetry about losing it at the laundromat and binge watching The O.C., and art on feminine monstrosity and masculine vulnerability.
From a strong selection of nonfiction, we have Rhea Bhagat’s essay, ‘The Invisible Hand’, reflecting on the intersection between toxic masculinity, capitalism and imperialism; ‘Bad Taste: The Ignorance of Internet Veganism’ by Ellen O’Brien, a writer, poet and law graduate with Guringai ancestry; and Emma Hardy’s ‘Hot Mess’ about the people who clean toilets at music festivals. When pitching her piece, Hardy answered ‘Why Voiceworks?’ with one of our favourite lines in Voiceworks’ history: ‘I love Voiceworks and believe that poo stories with heart are a great fit for your mag’. She wasn’t wrong.
Enjoy getting stuck into Voiceworks #108, ‘Retrograde’.
